The 2 things that are probably most important are the price and members. What use is a free site to you if there are very few members available that you are interested in.
It is not uncommon for sites to expect you to provide your details before they show you members you may be interested in. Be careful with such sites because those people who don't find what they are looking for never come back to the site again but their details are still on file. The site will count such registrations in their members but really they shouldn't.
Some sites will not show you up front what the fees are and so again their membership numbers are vastly over-stated because people will register, find out what the fees are and never come back to the site again. Our suggestions to help you choose which sites to consider are:
- Use the “Compare” facility on our site to get a quick list of the sites that could be worth you taking a closer look at.
- As you look at individual sites in our Compare section you can click “Go” which will take you directly to the site.
- Use the search facilities on the site to see how many members there are likely to be available. If you can do that and not have to register then if you like what you see, and like the price then that site should be on your shortlist.
- Many sites will not allow you to do a detailed search (e.g. by your local area, or age group) unless you register. If you have to pay to even do a search it may be best to avoid such sites – or at least email them with any questions before handing over any money.
- If you think there are sufficient members and the price is OK compared to other sites then take a look at the facilities the site offers. For example some offer video messages, some organise outings for their members, some concentrate on a specific area of the country.
- Before you sign up – think how long you want to be a member for. Usually the longer you sign up the cheaper it becomes. If you are new to internet dating you might consider signing up for one of the completely free sites just so that you can ease yourself into internet dating and not have to worry about the cost. Then once you are comfortable you can consider one of the paying sites - you may find one with better facilities on the site or more members so that the cost is worthwhile for you.
